Points of Interest

Maps in Magellan mapping GPSRs and MapSend have several types of objects:

1. Areas (e.g Lakes, Parks, Oceans, Rivers etc)
2. Polylines (e.g. Highways, Roads, rails, etc)
3. Points (e.g. Cities)
4. POIs
5. Topographic lines

These objects (or some of them) are parts of MapSend Map and are included into the detail map *img file while uploading to GPSR. In contrast to Waypoints they normally are not editable, and are defined in the MapSend software. All Magellan mapping GPSRs can accept these objects, but not all MapSend software have them all. Here is the matrix (some of mapSends):

Notes: 1) after some modification POIs can be added see makePOIaccept 2) POIs can be added

Do not mix up POIs and waypoints, POIs are part of the map, while waypoints are located separately, set of icons for waypoints and POIs is different. They have different behavior on the PC and GPSR maps.

POIs are subdivided into categories, each category has fields, where auxiliary information about POI can be added. Search of POIs can be done using their names.

On the PC screen POI's categories are shown with the appropriate icons (*.bmp, defined in the MAP\POI_img folder). On the GPSr screen POIs are shown with icons predefined in the firmware. Set of icons is the same for all types of receivers (as far as I know) and includes 87 different icons.

Here is example of POI in MapSend Topo (others are similar):

Left Image shows Campground POI on the MapSend Map, right image shows search and info window. Note auxiliary information fields at the bottom of the right image, these fields are the same for the category, but can be different for others. The auxiliary fields can or cannot be defined, in the latter case POI in the category will have only the name as a parameter. Some MapSends (S&D USA, S&D Canada) have subcategories, in this case in the "type" column subcategories will be shown (i.e. "Campgrounds" category has 2 subcategories: "private" and "public").

Different MapSends have different set of categories, and different set of icons, showing the categories. But all POI's categories will be shown with the same set of icons on the GPSR screen (since they are predefined in the firmware)

How POIs look on the PC screen is defined in the MAP\poi.cfg file, in this file category number has reference to appropriate *.bmp in the MAP\POI_img folder ([LOCALOPTIONS] section). [ACLV_INFO] section defines zoom level at which POI appears on the PC screen. In the following example POIs will be shown when zoom exceeds 1:100 000. See FAQ at Mapsend_Format yahoo group for more info.

In the MAP\export.cfg file there is a definition with what icon from the GPSR's set the category will be shown. In the example "Aerial Activities " category will be shown with "AERIAL" icon in the GPSr, "Entertainment" category will be shown with "DEFAULT" icon and "Recreation/Amusement Par" category will be shown with "AMUSEMENT" icon. "UNIT_PARAMS" define zoom properties on the GPSR screen, see mobilemapper and Magellan_Meridian yahoo groups for the definition.

Internal names in the third column are predefined in the firmware, for these names there is predefined set of icon (located also in the firmware). Complete set of internal names / icons consists of 87 items:

Here is how POIs look on the GPSR (Magellan Meridian GPS (Green)), The "NewMap" detail map with POis was created with MobileMapper Office and POI_DB_creator:

“NewMap.img” was created with MMO

The “NewMap” contains set of POI, names of POI’s categories are shown here

POI can be found by searching within each category

Here is an example of POIs in the “Aerial” category. POI name can be up to 41 character length, the rest can be made visible by moving with <- ->

On the screen POIs are shown by icons, individual icon represents category. The icons are different from WP icons, 87 different icons can be selected. Pointing to POI with marker shows name of the POI at the bottom of the screen

Categories can be made visible/nonvisible with checkboxes at runtime

Auxiliary record can be shown in GPSR's Database view ("Menu"-"Database"):
